Young Boy brags about being South Sudan’s Lone Wolf of HipHop, with no competition

South Sudan’s music scene is diverse, with Afrobeat, reggae, and traditional sounds dominating the airwaves. But when it comes to hip-hop, one name rings loud and clear: Young Boy. If you ask him, though, he’d probably tell you he’s not just in the game — he’s running it.

In his own words, he said “Some Rappers took Rap as Game, but I took it as my Category and Career, That’s why I’m doing it different, Everyone who tried to do hip-hop in South Sudan fell off. I’m still standing.” And he’s not exactly shy about saying it.

The self-proclaimed “King of Hip-Hop” in the region is known for his brash confidence. He’s quick to call out other artists who dipped their toes into hip-hop but couldn’t keep up with the grind. “It’s not about just dropping a track here and there,” Young Boy says, “It’s about consistency. It’s about survival. And I’m the only one who’s survived.”

To his credit, Young Boy’s catalog does back up some of that talk. With his gritty flow, raw lyrics, and a knack for blending local dialects with classic hip-hop beats, he’s carved out a space that feels authentically his. Tracks like “Fouda” and “Atim Ta Muhaba” would somehow back up his claims as they are often played on Tvs and Radios

It’s not all bravado, though. Young Boy knows that hip-hop, especially in a region like South Sudan, is about more than just music. “I’m here to represent. To give a voice to the streets. This is more than just rap — it’s a movement,” he says.

And while others may come and go, Young Boy stands tall, reminding anyone who’ll listen that he’s the last one still holding it down for South Sudanese hip-hop. Whether or not he’s the only serious player left is up for debate, but one thing is for sure: Young Boy has no plans of falling off anytime soon.

In his world, he’s the lone wolf — and he’s thriving.
